Construction News Update – Summer 2022

Dear Reader

Welcome to the Summer edition of our quarterly publication which contains a roundup of news from across our construction sectors: automotive, commercial, education, healthcare and residential. I hope you find this newsletter of interest and would be delighted to help with any enquiries you may have.

Spring definitely was a season of growth for our business. Our team has been ever busier completing projects and making way for new ones. In fact, I am pleased to highlight we have recently secured two new projects and very close to finalising another. This success is a testament to our growing strength and the much-needed confidence we can provide to client projects.

One of the new projects, which is in the final stages of confirmation, is for a new client and represents the largest residential scheme we have undertaken – valued at over £17m. Another mixed-use residential and commercial scheme will take place in Bury St Edmunds for a new client. We were also delighted to be invited back to Southend School for Boys.

Again, only recently, we have completed three projects: Maplewood Court Care Home in Maidstone, New offices for an insurance underwriter in Braintree, and a new teaching facility at a school in Bedford.

All live projects are progressing well. Developments include our care home site in Braintree for one of the UK’s largest care home providers and a 26,000 sqft commercial park in Ardleigh.

In addition to our construction projects, our highly skilled small works department is providing businesses with essential adhoc building, decorating and maintenance services. The Colchester-based team is well placed for local repairs, alterations and upgrades, so please contact us for a quote for any work required.

Since the last edition, we have been delighted to welcome Adam French to our leadership team as Construction Manager. Adam brings a wealth of experience, expertise and new ideas to our group and our clients. I have extremely excited about Adam’s arrival and therefore the future success of the construction group.

Finally, the team has been celebrating a third consecutive RoSPA Award for high standards in Health and Safety. This latest accolade aims to further demonstrate our unrelenting focus on standards and quality for our clients and to all personnel involved in our construction projects.

Please continue to explore the content on this page. Our estimating department remains very busy with progressing opportunities in all sectors and we hope to share more exciting news in the next edition. If you have any enquiries, please contact me or the team in the usual way.

Kind regards

Phil Holding

LIVE: Mixed-use Business Centre in Great Dunmow, Essex

Our £2.8m commercial sector contract in Great Dunmow will create a versatile mixed-use business centre consisting of office space and commercial units. The site team have made good progress following the project announcement in the previous edition. Located next to a busy access road in and out of the historic town, the project will require extensive routing of utility services for the new facility.

Initial groundworks for the building have been completed. July will be a busy month on site, including the commencement of the steel structure frame, tarmacking of the car park, and installation of pre cast concrete floors and stairs. Further on in the summer, work will begin on the sub structure brickwork.

Our team is working with the project managers at Real8 Group, architectural team at Inkpen Downie and the structural engineers at WA Consulting Engineers.

LIVE: Commercial park (26,000 sqft) in Ardleigh, Essex

Our construction site in Ardleigh, Essex, will create a new commercial park. The 26,000 sqft of commercial space will include two large office blocks and an adjoining car park. The £5.1m contract for NEEB Holdings is expected to complete in Q4 2022.

Block 1 (first photo) has brick and block work up to the first floor lintel height and Block 2 (second photo) is having the scaffolding lifted to follow suit. The car park area has had its base layer of tarmac laid and the groundworkers are currently digging out the ground beams and cropping piles for Block 1’s bin and bike shed.

Our architecture partner is Wincer Kievenaar Architects.

COMPLETED: Office Unit in Braintree, Essex

The site team at our commercial site in Braintree has been busy putting the finishing touches to a new £1.3m office unit for DOA Underwriting. The final photographs have recently been taken (as shown) and we will soon be adding this project to our extensive portfolio of completed commercial projects.

The facility comprises of two floors of office space. The top floor includes bespoke glass partition walls for two meeting rooms and a director’s office, (IT) server room, kitchen, shower and toilets. The ground floor includes entrance hall with stairs and lift, kitchen and toilets. The furnishing of both floors will be completed by the client.

The delivery team includes the project team at Daniel Connal Partnership and the architectural team at Duncan Clark & Beckett.

Education projects

NEW: Southend School for Boys, Essex

Horizon Construction was delighted to be welcomed back to Southend School for Boys in the Spring to deliver alterations to their existing buildings. The alterations involve creating new internal facilities by enclosing two outside spaces. First location is around a courtyard within the older section of the school and the other is a student seating area underneath a newer section.

Works are already progressing well in both locations. The first-floor joists over the original courtyard are underway, which will be followed by the installation of the first-floor steelwork. The curtain walling is being installed in the second location following the completion of brickwork and floor slab.

We are pleased to be working again with the team at PCH Associates on another construction solution in the education sector.

LIVE: Teaching Block for Grange Academy in Bedford

Construction works at the Grange Academy in Bedford to create a modern two-storey teaching block are very close to completion and on schedule. As planned, the new £2m facility will be in use at the start of the new academic year in September.

Internally, we are expecting to provide the handover in July. Externally, the building has been completed except for the flashings, down pipes and landscaping. We are looking forward to sharing the completion photographs very soon.

Once again, it has been a pleasure to work with the project and architectural team at Ingleton Wood.

Healthcare projects

LIVE: 75-Bed Care Home for Avery Healthcare in Braintree, Essex

Construction of a new 75-bed care home in Braintree, Essex, for Avery Healthcare Group. Following the commencement of works in January, the team is making great progress and the building’s structure is now taking shape.

Brickwork has started and is proceeding as planned. The first floor installation is scheduled for July and the first phase of groundworks is nearing completion. All works have been assisted with the installation and use of a tower crane with a 50m jib.

Horizon Construction is proud to be working with Avery Healthcare – a leading nationwide care home provider. Once completed, the newly named “Braintree Mews Care Home” will join their award-winning portfolio of care homes.

The project team includes the architects at Harris Irwin, project managers at Holden & Lee, and mechanical and electrical consultants at Harniss Consulting.

COMPLETED: 72-Bed Care Home for Oakland Care in Maidstone, Kent

The team is delighted to be underway with the handover of a new £7.3m care home in Maidstone, Kent, to Oakland Care. Maplewood Court Care Home is a fully equipped 72-bed facility that has now started to welcome its new residents.

The quality of the finished product is a testament to the commitment, attention to detail and expertise from the site and project teams. A huge congratulations and thanks to everyone involved.

We are looking forward to sharing the final photography in the next edition and on social media.

The project delivery team included Aedifice Partnership, ADG Architects and WA Consulting Engineers.

“Oakland Care carefully selects principal construction partners to deliver the high standards and cooperation we expect during all stages of construction for our new care homes. Maplewood Court Care Home in Maidstone represented the first project working with Horizon Construction. We were delighted with the level of service and collaboration from their team. Not only was the project delivered within budget, but it was also one of the smoothest transitions to an operational site we have experienced. This is a testament to the expertise, experience and commitment of their team. The new 72-bed care home is now one of our flagship facilities in our portfolio, offering an exceptional and friendly home for its residents. Our team hopes to be working again with Horizon Construction in the future.”
