Construction News Update – Autumn 2021

Dear Reader

Since the previous edition of our quarterly publication, the team at Horizon Construction has never been busier, so we hope you find this edition of interest. This publication is produced to solidify our expertise and dedication in construction to achieve the very best results for our clients. It also aims to celebrate the successful relationships we are building across our construction sectors.

With life slowly returning to a recognised level of normality, we are pleased to announce the award of several new construction contracts. These recent successes are another indication that the level of construction across our region is returning to a pre-COVID status.

Despite new and old industry hurdles for us all to overcome, such as the supply and pricing of materials, and a shortage of skilled labour – to name just a few – our team is delivering completed projects and much-needed confidence to our clients.

Recently completed projects include timely handovers for the 2021/22 academic year of a new sports hall and teaching block at Chelmsford County High School for Girls and a new teaching block at St Thomas More School in London. We have also completed 11 houses in Wix, Essex, which have already been sold and awaiting their new owners.

If you follow us on social media, you’ll know that our two large healthcare projects in Woodbridge (Suffolk) and Maidstone (Kent) are both on track to be completed in late 2021 and early 2022, respectively.

Works have officially begun at our new £5m commercial construction site in Colchester. The project represents 9 office units of varying size, which cover 26,000 sq.ft. of commercial space.

Over the summer we have also welcomed new arrivals to our team. Anne Lacey joins us as a Quantity Surveyor (learn about Anne’s fascinating professional journey in our latest news), Darrel Sadler brings his experience to the contracts management department, and Jill Betts and Izzy Firmin increase the capability of our administration and accounts departments.

With these recent appointments and a very busy pre-contracts department, we are pleased to see clear signs of recovery from the pandemic and hopefully other short-lived effects in the economy. Confidence has certainly grown and we are delighted to finally be considering life as ‘business as usual’.

Kind regards

Project updates

Commercial: New Office Complex in Colchester, Essex

This month our team has commenced construction work on this £5m contract to build high-quality offices in Colchester for NEEB Holdings. The project represents 9 office units of varying size, which cover 26,000 sq.ft. of commercial space.

We look forward to sharing photos of the progression of works at the site in future editions, as well as on social media. Our architecture partners are Wincer Kievenaar Architects.

As businesses start to emerge from a very challenging period over the last 18 months, we have noticed growing confidence through the level of enquiries received for commercial projects. This is supported by our construction survey earlier this year which showed a positive outlook, businesses planning to expand their operations, and a revised approach to working from home and hybrid working environments.

Healthcare: 72-Bed Care Home in Maidstone, Kent

Construction of a new 72-bed care home in Maidstone, Kent, for Oakland Care is expected to complete in Q1 2022. Roof and brick works are nearing completion, screeding is being laid and M&E is well underway. Other current works include dry liners and completing the windows and ceilings.

The project delivery team includes Aedifice Partnership, ADG Architects and WA Consulting Engineers.

The roof is finished, internal decorating is in its final stages and cleaning has begun. Works have started on external hard and soft landscaping. Railing and a community clock have been added. Commissioning of gas, electric and water has started. The second fix of M&E and carpentry is well underway.

The architectural team for this healthcare construction project is DWA Architects.

Education: Library at Chelmsford County High School for Girls, Essex

Following the completion of the school’s new sports hall, our team was awarded the contract to convert and refurbish the old sports hall into a library and learning environment.

The original sports hall dated back to 1906. Our team removed the old equipment, upgraded/improved facilities and installed glass partitions to create individual learning spaces. The furniture is due to arrive at the end of this month.

We are delighted to be working on this project with the team at PCH Associates

Education: New Teaching Block at St Thomas More School, Wood Green, London

A new teaching block at St Thomas More School will soon be ready for sixth form students. External works included landscaping and canopies.

During the build we invited a group of children from the school to visit the site to learn about the construction process, the industry and a career in construction.

The architects and project manager for this project is PCH Associates.
