Nestled in the historic market town of Woodbridge, Cavell Manor Care Home is a lovingly designed and constructed residence that offers a spacious and luxurious care environment, suited to the requirements of older people with long-term care needs.
Project requirements
The client’s vision for its new care home was very clear from the outset:
- A high-quality, leading facility in the Woodbridge area to complement their extensive portfolio of highly specialised care homes.
- An unwavering focus on the end-users and their experience, ensuring the care home environment supports their physical and mental wellbeing in all aspects. Residents should always feel at ease, independent, at home and a part of the local community.
The 1.4-acre site involved the creation of 55-bed care home and an ‘assisted living block’ comprising of 6 apartments and 2 houses.
Project solution
The care home site is located within a residential area of Woodbridge and lies close to the ‘Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ and two designated ‘Special Landscape Areas’. The history of the surrounding area dates back as far as the Doomsday book. Therefore, the design and construction of the facility were carefully considered and sympathetic to the character of the surrounding environment and residential neighbourhood, including height, scale and materials used.
Every stage of the construction process, inside and out, was delivered to the highest quality and detail. A biophilia approach to the interior design created relaxing and comfortable spaces throughout the facility. From an easy to navigate and accessible layout, locally sourced artwork, luxury fixtures and fittings, underfloor heating, acoustic monitoring, privacy glazing on balconies, landscaped gardens with views from low set windows, the facility was built by design with the end-users in mind. All areas had a luxurious feel and room sizes exceeded CQC standards.
The two-storey care home incorporated a lower ground basement containing a commercial kitchen, laundry room, plant room and welfare spaces. Other facilities included a self-serve kitchen, hair salon with spa treatments, family dining room and communal lounges, cinema, and sensory rooms.
Project performance
Cavell Manor Care Home is an excellent example of a biophilic care home with a community feel. One that will continue to positively impact the residence, local community and environment for years to come.
Construction of the care home facility took place during the strict controls of the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-21). The site remained fully operational throughout the 18-month programme.
All works were completed to the client-approved schedule and budget. Collaboration and transparency in working practices with the client and across all delivery partners ensured a smooth transition to an operational facility.
Our team actively engaged with the local residential community to keep them informed of developments and to resolve a small number of complaints. The management of health and safety was also exemplary with no reportable incidents.
Horizon Construction has been establishing itself in the healthcare industry and building upon a reputation for high-quality solutions and service. It takes pride in involving local communities and wider stakeholders in the construction phases to ensure successful and carefully considered projects.
