New Horizons in Construction

Horizon Construction celebrates 20 years in construction and is excited to announce new growth ambitions for the company, building upon its reputation of providing leading construction solutions across East Anglia, South East and London.

1999 to 2013

Horizon Construction was established in 1999 by two current directors, Phil Holding and Steve Tilley.  Over the last 20 years, their unrelenting vision has grown the company to a turnover of over £20m and a team of over 50 employees across 2 offices (Colchester and London).

Growth over this period required the appointment of key personnel and a constant focus on the business’s ambition to become a leading construction firm within its sectors and regional markets.  To assist with specific milestones in development, the company turned to specialist advice from business consultants, colleagues, customers and friends.  The directors’ strategy included challenging the way traditional construction services were delivered, by building a team which demonstrated to clients a commitment to high-quality customer service and solutions, expertise and professionalism.

Early success for the company (up to 2014) was mainly due to reactive measures, where the directors made business decisions based upon responses to market forces and demands.  Phil said: “Steve and I were construction professionals with our own experience and specialisms, so running and growing a business was something that we learnt as we went along.  The early period saw us steer our way through a severe recession and proudly without any redundancies, but we both knew growing the company of around 30 staff with a turnover of around £10m was going to need restructuring.”

2014 to 2018

Matthew Bynoe, Construction Director

To achieve the next stage of company development, the directors engaged external specialist advice to assist with a programme of restructuring the business, which led to enhanced systems and a schedule of senior appointments.  One of those key appointments was Matthew Bynoe, as Construction Director and a third board member.  Steve said: “We were delighted to have Matt join our board of directors.  He was our first site-based employee in 1999 and stayed with us for 7 years.  Matt gained valuable and rounded industry experience whilst away which helped us to shape the new direction of the company.”

The profile of the company changed which included more sophisticated marketing, a formal management structure and new management systems.  This created new employment opportunities and allowed the company to expand its professional team and attract new talent for planned growth.

Horizon Construction London

In 2015, two former and highly valued members of staff approached the directors with an opportunity to form a co-owned branch of Horizon Construction in London to tackle a buoyant market.  In 2016, Horizon Construction London was formed.

Horizon Construction grew rapidly in line with the adopted new business strategy and successfully achieved a reputation for leading construction advice, solutions and support through dependable expertise.

2019 and the future

New business and marketing strategy

Embracing this drive to continuously move forward, learn and improve as a company, in 2019 the directors embarked on the next chapter of development.  With a focus on marketing to deliver many of the required changes, the services of a marketing consultancy were engaged to assist with business development.  The company is now excited to deliver upon a new strategy and improvements to communications to build even better relationships with clients, business partners and suppliers.

Horizon Construction Group

Part of the new changes will be the launch of “Horizon Construction Group” this autumn which consolidates the operations, services and offices (Colchester and London) across the business.  A new corporate identity is being rolled out which aims to demonstrate our expertise, values and commitment to our clients.  Our new website, along with other communications, offers a comprehensive insight into our unique approach to construction services.

Phil said: “These new changes to our identity position our group of companies for the future.  Our remarkable and talented team are passionate about continuously improving the quality of services our clients receive and the services we can offer.  We have never wanted to stand still as a construction firm and take for granted the successes already achieved and relationships already built.  We know we can achieve more – we are now set for new horizons.”
